The topic of water pollution is constantly being raised, especially the issue of groundwater pollution. Farmers or entrepreneurs in Hangzhou, Wenzhou, and other places in Zhejiang Province have invested in inviting environmental protection directors to swim in the river, in order to draw attention to the severity of water pollution. Although various environmental protection directors have chosen to remain silent or refuse, the awakening of public environmental awareness has led to an unprecedented level of concern for water pollution.
Surface water pollution is obvious, but groundwater pollution is alarming. Out of China's 1.3 billion population, 70% drink groundwater, and over 400 out of over 660 cities use groundwater as their drinking water source. However, it is reported that 90% of urban groundwater in various regions has been contaminated.
And another set of data also indicates that groundwater is facing serious challenges. In 2011, 9 provinces and cities including Beijing and Shanghai evaluated the water quality of 857 monitoring wells within their jurisdiction. 2% of the monitoring wells were classified as Class I and II, while 76.8% were classified as Class IV and V monitoring wells.
Among the nine provinces and cities, Hainan Province has the best water quality, with Class II being the main type, followed by Shanghai and Beijing, mostly Class III. Heilongjiang and Jiangsu have a higher proportion of Class IV water, while Jilin, Liaoning, Guangdong, and Ningxia provinces and regions generally only reach the level of Class V.
The worsening water pollution situation has attracted unprecedented attention to the sewage treatment and regeneration industry. In the past two years, the gross profit margin in various regions has remained around 70%, and some even exceeded it. The industry has great potential for development.
